Lugano is easy accessible from all Milan airports (50 minutes from Malpensa Airport, the main hub in the northern Italy), as well as by train from the Zurich Airport (about 3 hours). Lugano also has a small airport served by Darwin Airlines, which directly connects the city to a few locations in Europe. Below you can find a detailed description of the different possibilities to reach the city.


From Lugano Airport (LUG), Switzerland: Take a taxi to Lugano (10 minutes drive, about  25 CHF).

From Zurich Airport (ZHR), Switzerland: Take the train from Zurich Airport to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (or Zurich HB), the Zurich Main train station (takes 10 minutes and costs about CHF 8). From Zurich HB take the train to Lugano. It goes once per hour, very nice 2.45 hours trip through the Swiss Alps (it costs about 60 CHF).

From Bergamo Airport (BGY), Italy: Take the bus to Milano Centrale train station (about 10 EURO). From Milano Centrale take the train to Lugano train station via Chiasso (roughly 60 mins and costs about 15 EUR).

From Linate Airport (LIN), Milan (Italy): Take the bus to Milano Centrale train station (about 5 EUR). From Milano Centrale take the train to Lugano train station via Chiasso (about 60 mins, 15 EUR). 

From Malpensa Airport (MXP), Milan (Italy): Take the bus to Lugano train station (roughly 80 mins, 30 EUR).

By car: Lugano is also very easy to reach by car as it is situated close to the main A2 motorway that links Central Europe (Zurich) to Southern Europe (Milan).

  • If you are approaching Lugano from the South (Milan direction) then you need to follow: Autostrada A9 in the direction of Como-San.Gottardo and take the exit that is signposted "Lugano SUD".

  • If you are approaching Lugano from the North (Zurich direction) then you need to follow: Autobahn A2 in the direction of St.Gotthard-Chiasso-Milano and take the exit that is signposted "Lugano NORD".
